BSI – Boiler and Steam Installations

Integrated Boiler & Steam Solutions

Waste Heat Boilers

Recovering energy from exhaust heat to reduce fuel costs and improve plant efficiency.

Waste Heat Boilers

Recovering Energy. Reducing Costs. Improving Efficiency.

Waste heat boilers (WHBs) are designed to recover thermal energy from flue gases produced by combustion processes or from hot waste air generated during industrial operations. Instead of allowing this energy to escape into the atmosphere, a waste heat boiler converts it into usable hot water or saturated steam.

At Boiler and Steam Installations (BSI), waste heat boiler solutions are engineered to improve overall plant efficiency, reduce fuel consumption, and significantly lower operating costs—especially when used alongside gas engines, turbines, or industrial process equipment.

Waste Heat Boiler Options

Flexible Solutions for Variable Heat Availability

BSI offers two primary waste heat boiler configurations to suit different operational requirements:

Waste Heat Boiler (WHB)

Utilises available flue gases or waste air to generate hot water or steam. Ideal where waste heat is consistently available from engines, furnaces, or process exhausts.

Combi Waste Heat Boiler

Recovers waste heat and includes an auxiliary burner. When recovered heat is insufficient, additional fuel is automatically used to maintain required steam or heat output.

Benefits of Waste Heat Boilers

Efficient, Sustainable, and Cost-Effective

Waste heat boilers offer multiple advantages across sustainability, efficiency, and operating cost reduction:

Lower Emissions

No additional emissions when operating solely on recovered heat. Even with auxiliary firing, emissions remain significantly lower.

Reduced Fuel Consumption

Recovering waste heat reduces fuel usage substantially compared to traditional combustion boilers.

Lower Operating Costs

Minimal fuel input and efficient energy recovery deliver significantly lower running costs over the lifecycle.

Improved System Efficiency

Recovering waste energy increases total efficiency of engines, turbines, and industrial processes.

Reliability Strategy

Waste Heat Boiler with Backup Boiler

BSI recommends a waste heat boiler system paired with a conventional backup boiler as the most reliable and cost-effective solution.

Supplement When Needed
If recovered waste heat is insufficient, output can be supplemented by burning additional fuel to maintain demand.
Operational Continuity
During maintenance or downtime, the backup boiler ensures uninterrupted supply to the plant.
Cost-Effective Design
Balanced recovery + backup creates a practical, dependable solution for variable heat availability.
